Drones that carry things

A payload drone is a drone built to carry something other than its own camera: cargo, sensors, a spray tank, a loudspeaker, a searchlight, a rescue float. The payload is the reason it flies. Choosing one therefore starts with the payload and the mission, not with a spec sheet.

Our range spans a wide range of lifting capacity. At the light end, the waterproof SwellPro Fisherman MAX FD2 drops 3.2 kg of bait beyond casting range. At the heavy end, the THEA 200MP coaxial octocopter is rated for 70 kg. In between are platforms for cargo transport, crop spraying, LiDAR mapping, infrastructure inspection, security patrol and search and rescue.

How to choose a payload drone

1. Define the payload

Write down what you will actually carry most of the time, not the heaviest thing you might carry once. A drone working well inside its limits flies longer and more safely, and its batteries last longer. As a rule of thumb, choose a platform whose rated payload comfortably exceeds your typical load.

2. Define the mission profile

How far does the payload need to go? How many flights per day? What altitude and temperature? A shuttle across a river 300 m wide is a different problem from a 10 km resupply run to a mountain station. Short, repeated heavy shuttles suit the THEA 190MP. Long-distance and high-altitude cargo suits the D50.

3. Choose the airframe layout

  • Quadcopter. Simplest and most efficient for its size, with the lowest maintenance. Little redundancy. Example: THEA 220MP.
  • Hexacopter. Six rotors give more margin after a motor problem, and it stays manageable. Example: GAIA 160MP, TTA G300.
  • Coaxial octocopter. Eight rotors in four stacked pairs give high thrust density and more redundancy in a compact frame. Examples: THEA 190MP, THEA 200MP.

4. Understand payload versus MTOW

Payload is what you can carry. Maximum take-off weight (MTOW) is everything combined: airframe, batteries and payload. More battery means more flight time but less payload. When a specification lists MTOW, as for the GAIA 190MP, ask what payload is left at the battery configuration you plan to use. We answer that question in every quote.

5. Plan for regulation from day one

Heavy-lift drones are professional aircraft. In the United States, Part 107 covers aircraft under 55 lb. Heavier operations need an exemption, and agricultural dispensing needs a Part 137 certificate. In the EU and UK, the open category stops at 25 kg MTOW, so heavy-lift work falls into the specific category with an operational authorisation. Long-range, beyond-visual-line-of-sight flights need specific approval almost everywhere. Some countries, including India, restrict drone imports. Our resources page and country pages link to the authorities.

6. Budget for the whole system

The aircraft is only part of the cost. Plan for battery sets and chargers (continuous operations need several), spare propellers and arms, payload mounts and accessories, transport cases, training and insurance. We quote complete systems so there are no surprises.

Payload drones by application

Cargo and logistics

Moving supplies, parts and tools to sites without good road access: mountain stations, islands, construction sites, mines. See cargo drones, heavy lift drones and logistics and delivery.

Agriculture

Spraying crop-protection products and foliar nutrients, and spreading seed and granules, without compacting soil or damaging crops. See agricultural drones and the TTA G300.

Mapping and surveying

Carrying LiDAR, photogrammetry cameras and multispectral sensors for topographic survey, volume calculation and asset mapping. See mapping drones and survey drones.

Inspection

Thermal and zoom payloads for power lines, pipelines, wind turbines, solar farms, bridges and buildings. See inspection drones and energy and utilities.

Public safety, emergency response and search and rescue

Locating people, broadcasting instructions, lighting scenes and dropping aid. See search and rescue drones, emergency response drones and public safety.

Security

Patrols with searchlight and loudspeaker deterrence over estates, industrial sites and events. See security drones.

Mining

Moving parts and supplies, carrying survey sensors and inspecting infrastructure on large, rough sites. See mining drones.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best payload drone?

It depends on the mission. For the heaviest loads, the THEA 200MP (70 kg). For long-range cargo, the D50. For agriculture, the TTA G300. For survey sensors, the GAIA 160MP. For rescue and security, the MX4-10 or SY800.

How much weight can a drone carry?

In our range, from 3.2 kg (SwellPro FD2) up to 70 kg (THEA 200MP). Flight time falls as payload increases.

Do I need a licence for a heavy-lift drone?

Almost always. Heavy-lift aircraft fall outside basic hobby rules in nearly every country and need registration, qualified pilots and operational approval.

Can you ship drones internationally?

Yes, by sea, air or express where permitted, with lithium batteries shipped as Class 9 dangerous goods. Some countries restrict drone imports, so check before ordering.

Do you provide training and spares?

Operating documentation, spares and remote technical support are available, and training can be arranged.

Can I customise a payload drone?

Yes. Payload mounts, release mechanisms, accessory modules and branding can be configured through our custom, OEM and ODM services.
